Tianmen Mountain & Heaven's Gate
A single massive mountain with a natural 131-meter stone arch, vertigo-inducing glass walkways bolted to cliff faces, and the world's longest passenger cable car. Tianmen Mountain is a completely different experience from the Forest Park — and it starts right from downtown Zhangjiajie.
World's Longest Cable Car
7.5 km from downtown to summit in 28 minutes. Glides over city rooftops, terraced farmland, and cliff faces. Worth the entry fee alone.
Heaven's Gate Arch
A natural 131-meter stone arch cut through the mountain. Visible from downtown on clear days. Climb the 999 steps or take the in-mountain escalator.
Glass Skywalks
Three glass-floored paths bolted to vertical cliff faces at 1,400m. The Coiling Dragon Cliff walkway is the most dramatic — 100 meters of glass with nothing but air below.
99-Bend Road
A serpentine road with 99 hairpin turns climbing the mountain. Take the bus down after descending Heaven's Gate — the switchbacks are an attraction themselves.

The Cable Car: 7.5 km of Pure Spectacle
The Tianmen Mountain cable car is listed as the world's longest passenger cableway. It departs from a station in downtown Zhangjiajie — you can walk there from the train station in 10 minutes — and climbs 7.5 km over 28 minutes. The ride starts over city rooftops and busy streets, transitions to terraced farmland and small villages, and then, for the final 10 minutes, climbs sheer limestone cliffs at a steep angle. The views straight down are genuinely thrilling.
We rode it in April 2026: the morning queue at 8:30 AM was about 20 minutes. By 10 AM, we saw the line stretching past 90 minutes. Go early. The cable car cabins hold 8 people and are not air-conditioned — in summer, it can get warm inside. The glass is often tinted or slightly scratched, so photographs through the windows come out hazy. Enjoy the ride with your eyes; save the photography for the summit.
Heaven's Gate: The 131-Meter Arch
Heaven's Gate (Tianmen Cave) is a natural stone arch 131 meters tall and 57 meters wide, cut through the mountain by centuries of erosion. It is visible from downtown Zhangjiajie on clear days — a dark oval near the summit. To reach it, you walk down from the cable car top station along a cliff-edge path (about 20 minutes), then face the famous 999-step staircase.
The steps are uneven, steep, and can be slippery after rain. We climbed them in November 2025: it took about 20 minutes going up, with several rest stops. The calf burn is real. Alternatively, an escalator built inside the mountain (CNY 32, about 7 minutes) bypasses the staircase entirely and deposits you inside the arch. We used the escalator up and walked down — this gave us the view from the top (looking down through the arch at the staircase and winding road below) without the quad-destroying climb. Walking down took about 10 minutes and was much easier.
Photography: The best angle is from the top looking down through the arch. A person standing on the staircase below provides scale. The afternoon light (3-5 PM) illuminates the arch face. In winter, clouds sometimes spill through the arch — a surreal shot if you get lucky. Drones are strictly prohibited on Tianmen Mountain.
Glass Skywalks: Walking on Air
Tianmen Mountain has three glass-floored skywalks bolted to the vertical cliff faces at about 1,400 meters above sea level. The most famous is the Coiling Dragon Cliff skywalk on the western side — 100 meters of transparent glass floor with nothing but 1,400 meters of air beneath your feet.
Coiling Dragon Cliff (West Line)
The longest and most dramatic of the three. 100 meters of glass flooring bolted to a vertical cliff. The views straight down the limestone face are genuinely vertigo-inducing — even if you are not afraid of heights, the first few steps are unsettling. Shoe covers (CNY 5) are required. You can walk on the solid inner path and step onto the glass sections only when you want — there is no requirement to walk the entire glass length.
East Line Skywalk
Shorter and less crowded than the west line. Same concept: glass floor, cliff face, 1,400-meter drop. If the west line skywalk has a long queue, this is a good alternative with essentially the same experience. The views face east, so morning light is better here.
Ghost Valley Plank Road
The original cliff path — a narrow walkway carved into the rock face with sections of glass floor added later. Less crowded than the others and has a more adventurous feel. The solid sections offer occasional leaning-out viewpoints that the glass skywalks do not.
The 99-Bend Road
The Tongtian Avenue — literally "Road to Heaven" — is a serpentine road with 99 hairpin turns climbing from the base of the mountain to Heaven's Gate. It is 11 km long and climbs over 1,000 meters in elevation. The road was built as a tourist attraction, and it succeeds: the bus ride down is a thrill in its own right.
With Route A, you take the bus down the 99-Bend Road after visiting Heaven's Gate. The bus drivers navigate the hairpins at a confident (read: alarming) pace. Sit on the right side for the best views. The ride takes about 20 minutes. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication beforehand — the combination of hairpin turns and steep grades has undone stronger stomachs than yours.
The Summit Temple (Skip or Visit?)
Tianmen Temple sits at the summit and dates back to the Tang Dynasty, though the current buildings are reconstructions. It is a functioning Buddhist temple with vegetarian food stalls and prayer halls.
Our honest take: if you are on a tight schedule, skip the temple. The architecture is unremarkable compared to the natural features, and the walk from the cable car top station to the temple and back adds 45-60 minutes. Use that time for the skywalks and Heaven's Gate instead. If you have a full leisurely day, or if you specifically enjoy temple architecture, it is a pleasant enough walk through a high-altitude forest.
How to Fit Tianmen Mountain Into Your Trip
As a Half-Day Add-on
Tianmen Mountain is the only major Zhangjiajie attraction that starts from downtown — not Wulingyuan. This makes it perfect for arrival day or departure day. Land at Zhangjiajie airport at noon, check into your city hotel, walk to the cable car station, and spend the afternoon on the mountain. Or visit in the morning and catch an afternoon train out.
